According to protocol, I am to say something about myself to entice you to talk to me. Hmmm.
On second thought, let's first play the Dinner Party Game.
We sit in the dining room of an old Victorian house, circa 1900. Chandeliers float from the ceiling as if suspended by mere thought. The table they illuminate reminds you of Da Vinci’s “Last Supper.” For a moment you almost believe it is. There’s something palpably alive about the wood, though stained & scarred. The room is ablaze with a hundred candles, enough to show that the chairs—plush red velvet—are empty.
You sit at the head, I at the foot. You ask when the guests will arrive. I answer: as soon as you say their names. Tonight’s theme is Beauties and Bandits of the Bible. For one evening let us imagine that the table has the power to incarnate anyone from biblical history that you wish, provided he or she is bone-meltingly beautiful or bad-to-the bone.
Given the parameters, who would you invite to fill the other ten chairs?
While you’re making the guest list, here’s a verbal appetizer. I’ve been called: Mystifyingly lovely. Whimsical. Part damselfly. Part white Bengal tigress. A dryad. Oh, and wicked smart.
Her Brain—is wider than the Sky—
For—put them side by side—
The one the other will contain
Venus in Flip Flops: Aww, shucks, Em. You say the sweetest things!
Others say I’m intense, wickedly funny, sensitive, fiercely driven, free-spirited, artistic, unconventional, deeply loving, unforgettable, passionately devoted to Art. Possessed of a Mafioso type loyalty.
And those are just my Enemies.:)
What makes me smile? Roughly ten or so facial muscles. Most notably, the orbicularis oris, the buccinator, & let us not forget the lovely caninus. Thankfully I didn’t fall asleep during that part of AP biology.
Outside the physiological, how about herons rising from the water. Tangibles? Hedgehogs. (Gotta love a wee beastie that looks like a pincushion & still pulls off cuddly.) The way singing puts me in a body heaven.
I am an inveterate word junkie—total book nerd. My idea of a perfect evening? A poetry reading or play at the Folger. I'm equally happy at a hockey game cheering the Caps to victory. My ministry is singing--using my voice to minister to others for the glory of God! I love reading, art museums—a lover of Beauty, natural and invented—and am a true connoisseur of hockey pucks. My tastes run toward modern art—the more bizarre the better. I am also opera-obsessed—just heard Renee Fleming sing at the Myerhoff. I’m a gipsy-artist girl at heart and would love to meet someone who shares my passions for music, art, and words—and ice hockey. Go Caps!
You and I believe that union with the beloved is a sacrament. I would love to meet someone who has a little bit of Aslan in him (not a tame lion), with a fun, adventurous side, and who is deeply committed to his faith. Someone loving and funny, patient and gentle, who will appreciate my artistic side and my traditional values, someone who lights a fire in my soul, and seeks building a deep and abiding friendship, and seeing where that leads. Hopefully to a passionate soul-searing love. Someone to share the rest of my life with.
Still waiting on that guest list. Dinner’s at 8. I’m in the red dress twirling my glass of Smart Water sideways at the end of the table. It’s not nice to keep a lady waiting.
